Belts, Merit Badges, and Courses - Oh My!

Welcome to the Courses section of Dojo University. If you're new here or need a refresher, please read on!

What this is:

While the other "side" of Dojo U focuses on ongoing content to keep your piping fresh and steadily improving, this side of Dojo U focuses on building your knowledge, and acquiring essential bagpipe "checkpoints" that all pipers should experience at some point during their careers.

This side of the site is fully interactive, and as you achieve things, you'll earn points towards achieving your next "belt" level - kind of like a Karate Dojo would have belt levels (see what we did there?)

Belt Levels

Everyone starts off as a White Belt at Dojo U, but as you acquire the "Merit Badges" on this site you'll quickly gain points towards your Yellow Belt. Over time, as you become a better and better piper, you'll progress through the belts and perhaps eventually become a Black Belt - what we'd consider to be a true master piper. Click here to check out all of the belt levels.

Note: You can see your current belt level in the widget area in the side-bar at any time when you're on this Courses site.

Merit Badges

Merit Badges are simply achievements you can earn to acquire points towards your next Belt Level. There are two types of Merit Badges; Course Merit Badges and Experience Merit Badges.

Course Badges

Some Merit Badges require you to complete one of our online courses in order to attain your experience points. The courses range across a wide variety of bagpipe topics. The Beginner's Tutor, fingerwork fundamentals, instrument skills, Piobaireachd knowledge, etc. are all examples of the types of knowledge that will be tested when acquiring Course Merit Badges. Click here to check out all of our Merit Badges.

Experience Badges

Other Merit Badges ask you to submit documentation that you have acquired a certain essential type of bagpipe experience. For example, if you have performed at a certain level with a band or as a soloist, you can submit a record of that performance to acquire points towards your next Belt Level. For a few more examples, you could play for highland dancers, perform with other types of instruments, attend a real-life bagpipe workshop, etc., to earn more Experience Badges. Click here to check out all of our Merit Badges.

Note: You can see your most recent earned Merit Badges in the widget area in the side-bar at any time when you're on this Courses site.

To Get Started

Use the navigation menu of the site to see a list of Merit Badges you have yet to acquire. Or, simply view all of our Available Courses to select what you'd like to learn, and dive in! It's that simple.
